Preparing your home for a homam
Space, timing, materials and the sankalpam — a practical checklist for families hosting a homam.
A homam is a fire ceremony performed with specific mantras and offerings. Whether it is a Ganapathi homam before a house-warming or a Navagraha homam recommended after a horoscope reading, good preparation lets the family take part calmly.
Choose the space
- A room or covered area with good ventilation — the fire produces smoke.
- A floor that can take a brick homa kundam, or a metal kundam if bricks are not possible.
- Space for the family to sit around, and for the kalasam and offerings.
Confirm the timing
The date and starting time are chosen in advance. Homams often begin early in the morning; plan travel for relatives accordingly.
Materials
You will receive a list of pooja materials — typically ghee, samith sticks, grains, fruits, flowers, garlands, coconuts, betel leaves and new cloth for the kalasam. Agree in advance which items the family will buy and which will be arranged by the priest.
The sankalpam
The sankalpam states who the homam is performed for. Keep the names, birth stars (nakshatram) and gotram, if the family follows one, ready for everyone to be included.
On the day
- Keep the area clean and free of footwear.
- Arrange water, a small towel and a vessel for prasadam.
- Switch fans off near the fire.
The homam itself is always performed in person; the planning conversation can happen by phone or online.
